Cable System Rejuvenation
Categories:
The idea of cable system rejuvenation is ingenious, a series of solutions that seems almost obvious once explained yet took decades of experience to refine. Medium-voltage power cables do not usually fail suddenly; instead, the individual components deteriorate over many years, accumulating a myriad of microscopic defects as moisture and electrical stress conspire to weaken the insulation. Replacing them wholesale is expensive and disruptive, so utilities face a technoeconomic puzzle: how to extend the life of assets that are not yet broken, but no longer entirely trustworthy.
Rejuvenation is one of the many answers to this conundrum with a sequence of targeted interventions at the level of the terminations, neutral wires, joints and cables. It is a strategy less about perfection than pragmatic optimization, trading a hopefully modest, well-timed investment for additional service life.
