Evaluation of diagnostic techniques, remote monitors, degradation and failure modes on underground equipment

This research area seeks to better understand the performance of underground equipment to produce information which can inform diagnostic approaches, inspection and maintenance, and material specifications. The research includes: forensic analysis of new, aged, or failed underground switches provided by utilities to understand degradation and failure modes; investigation into network transformer diagnostic techniques, including dissolved gas analysis and the use of remote monitors (DGA, pressure, temperature, and oil level).
